Derek Harrison

Derek Harrison writes contemporary folk songs that pull from many traditions but retain a distinctly Canadian outlook. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, his solo material showcases his lyrical songwriting and fingerstyle acoustic guitar. Born in Harrow, ON and based at times in Montreal, Toronto, Melbourne and various border towns, he has performed throughout Canada, Europe and Australia.

His new album, Blossington, was recorded in Toronto by Brodie Stevenson and performed with members of The Old Salts and The Barrel Boys. Named for the Bloor/Ossington neighbourhood that gave rise to these songs, Blossington is a bluegrass-tinged collection of lyrical folk songs that deal with, for the most part, the complicated relationships people have with the places they're connected to.

"Blossington is, not unexpectedly, an album about places—especially all the ones Harrison has left behind... It was a summer at the corner of Bloor and Ossington that shape how Blossington came out. Some of that heat can be felt through Harrison’s storytelling and fingerpicking as he charts what brought him to that corner, and hints at what led him away."
